A Glimpse of God's Handiwork The Living in Faith clinic in Haiti is led by Dr. Russ Montgomery and his clinical staff and they have helped thousands of Haitians with their vision. Russ has been serving there for years. It is a country of great need and eye surgeons are always needed. Take a few minutes (2:48) to watch the video and read the reflections of a Medical Student who went on a short-term trip to get a glimpse of the tremendous work Russ and his teams can do on a short term trip. If you want to learn more about Living in Faith and their next short-term mission trips, go to https://www.livinginfaith.net/.
Reflections I went on my first medical mission trip to Haiti. The medical team consisted of six people: Dr. Cindy Volpe (an ophthalmologist), Michael (her husband), Shay (ophthalmic technician), Shalanda (surgical technician), Russ (the optometrist who leads this medical ministry), and me. As a medical student, I had the privilege of doing a bit of everything including preparing patients for surgery, teaching the clinic staff, and capturing memorable moments on camera. The three surgery days on this trip typically began around 8 AM and finished as late as 9 PM. Through it all, I saw God’s handiwork and felt His presence during my interactions with the medical team, clinic staff, and patients. Add a commentWritten by Keke Liu

“The Lord’s compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness” Lamentations 3:22-23. The 2014-2016 worlds’ worst epidemic of Ebola is raging throughout Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia in West Africa. In January, February, and part of March, 2015 I am present at the Kissy UMC Hospital as an ophthalmologist to help regular eye patients, as well as, those with complications from Ebola. It is a lonely life. I live in isolation. I can touch no one for fear of the spread of the disease by contact. Gatherings are prohibited throughout the country except for church and mosque services. I join the stream of people entering the Brown Memorial United Methodist Church. Strict precautions and guidelines include disinfectant hand washing and temperature checks with infrared no-touch sensors. The ushers are friendly but firm. There is no touching of another worshipper. Parishioners are dressed in their finest apparel. In spite of the tropical heat, most men are wearing full suits with white shirts and ties. The mature women are wearing hats. Young people are in their best. While jeans appear everywhere on the streets, not a single pair is present in the congregation. At precisely 9:30 a.m. (seemingly everyone has a cell phone with the correct time) the choir marches in with the pastors, all in step, singing lustily with bass voices predominant. One can only imagine being in heaven. Add a commentWritten by Dr. Lowell Gess

A few months ago, a friend of mine was at lunch talking with a friend about the movie, Dunkirk. It’s a fantastic movie telling the story of the battle of Dunkirk in the early stages of World War II. If you are unfamiliar with the backstory, about 400,000 British and French troops were surrounded by the Germans near the city of Dunkirk with their backs up against the Strait of Dover. They were in a desperate situation, sitting ducks for the German forces. What made it worse is that because Dunkirk isn’t a port city the British Navy couldn’t get their large ships to the troops to rescue the soldiers. They were facing annihilation! Worried or anxious about an upcoming surgery? Here are some great Bible verses to meditate on! Joshua 1:7-9 "Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Add a comment Jan

"Even as faith endures in our secular age, believing doesn't come easy. Faith is fraught; confession is haunted by an inescapable sense of contestability. We don't believe instead of doubting; we believe while doubting. We're all Thomas now." - Charles Taylor Is the contemporary North American church in decline? If you do a casual search of the Internet or a glance at article titles of Christian publications over the past year, you will probably find a number of topics related to the waning of the North American church or the low numbers of Millennials who have a religious affiliation or identify with the church – according to a 2015 Pew survey, 36 percent of those born between 1990 and 1996 are religiously unaffiliated. You may even hear someone say, “I love Jesus, but I don’t like the church.” Add a commentWritten by Bryan Glanzer
