Reflections I went on my first medical mission trip to Haiti. The medical team consisted of six people: Dr. Cindy Volpe (an ophthalmologist), Michael (her husband), Shay (ophthalmic technician), Shalanda (surgical technician), Russ (the optometrist who leads this medical ministry), and me. As a medical student, I had the privilege of doing a bit of everything including preparing patients for surgery, teaching the clinic staff, and capturing memorable moments on camera. The three surgery days on this trip typically began around 8 AM and finished as late as 9 PM. ![]() Would you consider a term of service in Ecuador in 2012? Has God called your family to serve in a different capacity than you do currently?
Shell Hospital in eastern Ecuador continues to look for an ophthalmologist for help in staffing starting in June 2012. Please prayerfully consider helping for a term to continue to grow this exciting program which is reaching out to 4 provinces in eastern Ecuador.
The program, which is run under HCJB Global (www.hcjb.org) and Vision Outreach International (www.visionoutreach.org) has grown very rapidly in one year. The gift of a new Alcon Laureate phaco machine along with donations has resulted in availability of modern cataract surgery to patients regardless of ability to pay. Consistent quality ophthalmology care has not been available before in the entire area. In addition, modern YAG and diode lasers are available also for the first time.
Areas of current growth in the program have concentrated on:
1. High quality modern cataract surgery with increasing reputation and volume
2. Regular outreach brigades to local communities to help identify those with ocular needs.
3. Integration of care of physical and spiritual vision of patients.
Areas for future growth will include:
1. Teaching ophthalmology to Ecuadorian family practice residents.
2. Teaching phaco and manual sutureless surgery to Ecuadorian ophthalmology residents.
3. Becoming an an ophthalmic technician training center

Extremely affordable living arrangements and very safe family environment including a missionary school up to grade 8 all within walking distance of the hospital 3. Built in missionary community with multiple agencies represented in Shell 4. Extremely accessible location from most US locations since Quito is 5 hours from Atlanta and Shell is 5 hours drive from Quito 5.
