The Lighthouse for Christ Eye Center and Mission - Ongoing Need for Ophthalmologists

Lighthouse BowmanThe Lighthouse for Christ Eye Center and Mission has a long tradition of providing world-class eye care to the many thousands of patients who enter their front door each year in Mombasa, Kenya. In order to provide their patients with the best possible care, they count on visiting volunteer doctors to come and teach their Kenyan national doctors new techniques, medical treatments, and technology. Their Kenyan national doctors are well-trained and highly skilled, but they are not always afforded the many educational opportunities experienced by doctors outside of Kenya. Subspecialty volunteers in Cornea, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Glaucoma, Oculoplastics and Retina can provide their doctors with new skills that can be put to use immediately. The general ophthalmologist, optometrist, nurse, and technician can all find their skills highly utilized and appreciated during their stay at the Lighthouse Mission.

Most volunteers come to Mombasa for one or two weeks. There are opportunities to assist the staff and national doctors in the clinic, in the operating theater, and on outreach rural eye camps. They have very nice accommodations on their mission compound and encourage volunteers to bring their families. Many of the medical volunteers will remain in Kenya after their time at the mission to go on Safari at the nearby Masai Mara game preserve.

If interested, go to their website to learn more and contact their stateside Director of Volunteers, Dr. Larry Kenney, an ophthalmologist at Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania, with any questions (lkenney23@verizon.net).

MSICS Training for Surgeons

voi

GSA logow tagl

There is tremendous need for a very good cataract procedure where phacoemulsification technology is either not available or too expensive to provide to the masses that need surgery. Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) is the perfect surgery for much of the world: it is inexpensive, effective, produces minimal astigmatism, sutureless, safe, relatively quick to perform and is relatively simple to learn with good instruction. If you have an interest in doing medical missions in the future, strongly consider MSICS training. Our friends at Global Sight Alliance and Vision Outreach International would love to assist you!
